A1 Stream Locomotive Trust Darlington Wednesday 10th July 2024

A private visit to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust in Darlington currently building Britain’s most power steam locomotive, LNER P2, 2007 Prince of Wales.  The previous P2, Cock o’ the North, was built in 1937 and was extensively tested in the UK, before further testing in France.  Ahead of its time, it was not a total success and the engine was rebuilt as a conventional Pacific during World War 2.  Using 21st Century technology, Prince of Wales will attempt to make good the design and once built, it will be the most powerful steam locomotive in Britain.  This visit will provide an opportunity to see the locomotive under construction.

Rail Tickets for those without an Educational Free Pass or ‘Priv’ Facilities

For those without educational free pass or priv facilities, the cheapest ticket for the outward journey is a London Kings Cross to North Road Advance Single, which at the time of writing (mid May) currently £58.40 or £38.50 with a applicable railcard.    For the return journey, the cheapest ticket is £53.70 or £35.40 with an applicable railcard.  Note these are Advance Singles and are quota-controlled, so prices are likely to go up and early booking is strongly advised.  Note these tickets are only valid on the booked trains.

For the return journey, it is cheaper to use split tickets:  North Road to York Advance Single £9.60  and York to London Kings Cross Advance Single £31.30.

Book at LNER or any National Rail operator’s website.  For split tickets, it can be easier to book at TicketSplit, as all tickets can be booked through one search, though they do take a small fee for split ticket savings, where applicable.

DO NOT use thetrainline or other similar third party sites as you will pay more as these sites charge fees which National Rail Train Operator websites and some third party websites do not charge and despite claims, thetrainline does not obtain the maximum savings by using split tickets.
